Gianni Agnelli's style: sprezzatura in three details.

Gianni Agnelli was neither an actor nor a fictional character: he ran Fiat. Yet it is the Turin industrialist that the vocabulary of style retained to define sprezzatura, the art of studied negligence. His suits were perfectly orthodox; three tiny deviations, always the same ones, made him a reference. The rule first, the deviation after: the order is not reversible.
The watch over the cuff
The most copied gesture in the male wardrobe: wearing the watch over the shirt cuff. The practical justification Agnelli gave convinces no one, and that is precisely the point: the deviation does not need to be useful, it needs to be his.
The detail only works on a shirt whose cuff is cut for it: close enough to hold the watch, long enough to show past the jacket. Copying the gesture without adjusting the cuff produces the opposite of the intended effect: affectation instead of ease.
The unbuttoned collar and the loose tie
Agnelli wore button-down collars whose points he left free, and ties slightly askew, sometimes thrown over a sweater. Here again, the deviation rests on a strict base: the collar is structured, the tie is finely made, the knot is tied with care and then slightly undone.
The nuance is decisive. An outfit neglected through inattention reads immediately; a perfect outfit unsettled on a single point reads as freedom. Sprezzatura is a hierarchy: one deviation at a time, on an irreproachable base.
Grey flannel and the double-breasted suit
Agnelli's core wardrobe was entirely sober: grey flannel, deep blues, Prince of Wales checks, and a double-breasted suit worn with a naturalness that has done much for the current return of that cut.
Few pieces, exceptional cloths, no visible branding: word for word, the definition of the quiet luxury that 2026 consecrates. The lesson has not aged because it rested on no fashion: a beautiful cloth well cut is the only luxury that shows without showing off.
